HARMONY

(King James Version)

Ps. 133:1 A Song of degrees of David. “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!”

(God’s Word—Translation—1995)

Ps. 133:1 [A song by David for going up to worship.] “See how good and pleasant it is when brothers and sisters live together in harmony!”

Harmony is defined in several ways. For our purposes, we will examine harmony that causes music to be a pleasure to listen to. In this case, Harmony is “the simultaneous combination of notes in a chord that produces a sound that is pleasing to the ear.”

A piano has 36 black keys, 52 white keys for a total of 88 keys. A child sat down at a piano and striking one key at a time, he pecked out the song Jesus Loves Me. From the child’s simple efforts, we would probably recognize the song that our children learn in Sunday school. It was played with a single note for each of the up and down movements of the melody. The music was plain, easy to understand and simplistic. It was not complex, not intriguing and not very compelling.

However, a more skilled pianist sat at the very same piano and using the same 36 black keys and 52 white keys, combined several of those keys together at the same time. In doing so he created a sound so beautiful so touching- that it struck a spiritual chord way down inside the soul.

Both the child and the skilled pianist played the same song. So, what was the difference between the two renderings of the same song? The answer is found in one word: “Harmony”.

Harmony is “the simultaneous combination of notes in a chord that produces a sound that is pleasing to the ear.”

Harmony happens when many keys are blended correctly together and struck at the same time. A piano can only produce the beautiful sounds of harmony when the pianist knows which keys must be struck, and at what time.

Harmony happens in the church when God’s People respond in oneness to the wise and knowing hand of the Master Musician.

God is the ultimate creator of harmony. From the gorgeous hues of springtime colors to a perfectly designed ecosystem that sustains life on earth; from the stunning diversity of coexisting beasts in the animal kingdom, to the intelligent interaction of men of different languages and cultures…God is the ultimate creator of harmony.

God wants to restore harmony in the church. As the master pianist God wants to strike the chords and create the harmonious sounds that move saints into a deeper commitment, and the sinner into salvation.

The world is listening intently for the gorgeous strains of heavenly harmony that can only be found in the oneness of a loving church.
